Why choose SJB scripts

Why choose SJB scripts?

Over the past few months, I’ve been speaking with a number of amateur dramatic groups who are paying substantial fees to license scripts — in some cases £500 or more, with further charges added for recording rights. That’s a huge amount of money for volunteer‑run groups, and it’s money taken directly out of the community. Every inflated licence fee means less funding for the things that truly matter: improving facilities, supporting local food banks, helping youth schemes, contributing to hospices, or simply keeping ticket prices affordable so families can continue to enjoy live theatre together.

Local amateur dramatic groups are the beating heart of their communities. They are places where creativity thrives, friendships form, confidence grows, and people from all walks of life find a sense of belonging. These groups don’t just put on shows — they create memories, nurture talent, and bring people together. When they’re forced to spend hundreds of pounds on licensing a single script, it limits their ability to invest in themselves and to give back to the very communities they serve.

I’m a semi‑professional writer, with several of my scripts nominated for — and some winning — NODA awards. I’ve written pantomimes, sketches, and short plays, and I cover all the costs of SJB Scripts myself. I’ve now removed my scripts from commercial licensing sites so I can manage them directly and ensure they remain accessible, affordable, and community‑focused.

And that leads me to my intention.

As I’m currently undergoing cancer treatment, I want my work to do something meaningful. So I license my scripts to amateur groups in return for a donation of your choice to a cancer charity of your choice — and that includes permission to record the production, with no extra fees, no hidden charges, and no complicated add‑ons.

No group should have to choose between putting on a show and supporting their community. No group should be priced out of creativity. No group should be punished for wanting to share their work with families, friends, and supporters.

With SJB Scripts, your money stays where it belongs: in your community, supporting the people who need it most.

The Writer Behind the Magic

SJB Scripts aren’t written for vast budgets or West End stages they’re crafted for the heart of British theatre: village halls, school stages, church centres, and community groups. Every script is designed to work brilliantly with mixed‑ability casts, limited space, and the joyful chaos of amateur theatre.

When you license an SJB script, you don’t just get a script you get me in your corner.
I offer:
•     Tailored script tweaks
•     Staging and set advice
•     Help with comic timing, character interpretation, and audience participation
•     Quick, friendly responses throughout your rehearsal process
You’re never left on your own.

My scripts are built to make your cast shine:
•     Clear comic beats
•     Strong character moments
•     Opportunities for improvisation
•     Doubling options
•     Family‑friendly humour
•     Big ensemble moments that include everyone
They’re written with love, care, and a deep understanding of how amateur groups work

I’ve been part of the Loddon Players for 26 years, working every role from stage crew and stage manager to actor. Sixteen years ago I took on the roles of Producer and scriptwriter, and since then I’ve written sixteen pantomimes. My work has been recognised regionally: four of my pantomimes have been nominated for NODA (East) Best Pantomime since 2017, and Mother Goose won NODA (East) Best Pantomime in 2023.

I’ve also written numerous sketches for variety evenings, two one‑act plays, and during the COVID lockdowns I wrote and produced many sketches for Zoom, several of which were recognised by NODA (Search Loddon Players on YouTube) . Over the years audiences and fellow performers have told me how much joy these shows bring; watching the audience from the tech box during the 2026 performance of Cinderella made me realise that if we can bring a little warmth and light into someone’s life for two hours, that is everything.

Conversations with local groups revealed a recurring problem: steep licensing fees for scripts that strip funds away from community groups and the causes they support. I had 19 scripts that people enjoyed, and I wanted to share them in a way that kept performances affordable and gave back. That idea became SJB Scripts, A collection of ready‑to‑perform scripts offered at accessible rates, with a donation from proceeds going to a local cancer charity.

The magic of theatre is alive on village hall and community stages. My aim is to help local performers shine, keep costs low for volunteer groups, and ensure every production can bring laughter, warmth, and a little theatrical magic to its audience.

As I’m currently undergoing cancer treatment, my intention is to license my scripts in return for a donation to a cancer charity of your choice. It’s my way of turning a laugh shared on stage into a powerful contribution toward a cure. My scripts are written with heart, down-to-earth humour, and a deep understanding of what makes community theatre so special. Every script is an original… well, as original as a pantomime script can be! They’re all written by me, with love, mischief, and the occasional spelling mistake.
